The next gin cocktail you need to try is… a Southside!
On a hot summer day, it can be hard to beat a mojito. Unless, of course, gin is your spirit of choice, in which case, you’re gonna make yourself a Southside!
A fun twist on a Tom Collins, a Southside is made with mint, lemon, lime, and your favorite light and airy gin. This is the citrus lover’s gin cocktail, for those who like something tart but invigorating.
This summertime fave has been around since 1917, and it’s easy to imagine a day at the races or out on the marina sipping this delightfully refreshing cocktail.
Even Al Capone was rumored to have enjoyed a Southside, lending credibility to the story that it might have been named after the South Side of Chicago during his heyday.
How To Make A Southside
Ingredients:
- 6 mint leaves
- 2 oz gin
- ½ oz lime juice
- ½ oz lemon juice
- ½ oz maple syrup
- Garnish: lemon twist, a spring of mint
Directions:
- In a cocktail shaker, add mint leaves and muddle gently, just enough to press the leaves and release the mint juices.
- Add gin, lemon juice, lime juice, and syrup. Fill with ice and shake until cold. Keep in mind, the longer you shake the more you dilute the cocktail.
- Strain into a cocktail glass.
- Garnish with a lemon twist and lightly distressed mint sprig. (Slap the mint between your hands to crush the leaves a bit and release the oils.)
For a fun variation that makes for a perfect afternoon sipper, add soda water to turn it into a Southside Fizz!

🍸How To Choose The Perfect Gin For The Job🍸
Gin is distilled with botanicals (the magic ingredient being juniper) and all have their very own distinct flavor.
That means not every gin is right for every gin cocktail.
So how do you pick a gin that will show up in your cocktail of choice, without completely taking over?
Here are the top 3 types of gin you’ll find behind every bar, and which cocktail they’d be best for.
London Dry Gin
This is considered the highest-quality gin you can get. Traditionally dry flavor which has been distilled to a completely neutral spirit of 45% ABV. Often noted for their flowery and aromatic characteristics.
This is your gin of choice for Martinis, Gin and Tonics, and Gin Fizzes.
Old Tom
Made popular in the late 1800s, this gin is a sweeter version of London Dry gin, and is much lighter. It’s also much easier on the gin’s trademark juniper flavor, and blends better with a more fruity cocktail.
This is the gin of choice for drinks like a Tom Collins, Greyhound, or Southside.
New Western Dry
In the early-to-mid 2000’s, people started to experiment more with gin distilling, and new flavors and variants of gin cropped up everywhere!
They started to embrace unusual and exotic botanical blends, with juniper taking a backseat to other, more noticeable herbs and fruits. These gins were created with more modern cocktails in mind, and bring a whole new flirtatious vibe to a steady classic.
These are the gins of the Negroni, the Hanky Panky, and the Gin Mule.
These are only 3 of the many different types of gin out there, so don’t be afraid to explore all the options in our store. Just remember, more expensive doesn’t necessarily mean better.
Choosing the right gin for you is a personal decision, based on your own favorite flavor palates and cocktail choices, so hit up those tasting rooms and keep an open mind!
Above all, know that satisfaction usually comes with quality, so find your best gin and then add it to every cocktail!

The next gin cocktail you need to try is…the Hanky Panky!
It’s fun, it’s frisky, and it even has a theme song! (Kind of…)
A little sweet, a little bitter -and a whole lot of fun - the Hanky Panky makes use of Fernet-Branca, an Italian bitter that adds a punch of herbal flavor (and booze! It has an alcohol level of 40-45%!).
This isn’t a subtle cocktail for the faint of heart! Even ordering it takes a bit of cheekiness.
“Bartender, a round of Hanky Panky!” will turn heads no matter where you order it, and might even get you more than you asked for if you’re lucky. ;)
Invented in the roaring 1920s by a bartender named Ada Coleman, who invented it for a then-famous actor, Sir Charles Hawtrey.
Upon tasting it, he declared “By Jove! That’s the real hanky panky!” And thus a new cocktail made its way into the Bartender’s Handbook.
How To Make A Hanky Panky
Ingredients:
- 1 ½ oz gin
- 1 ½ oz sweet vermouth
- ½ tsp Fernet-Branca
- Garnish: orange twist
Directions:
- In a cocktail mixing glass, combine gin, sweet vermouth, and Fernet-Branca.
- Fill the glass with ice and stir for 30 seconds.
- Strain into a glass, garnish with an orange twist, and enjoy!

The next gin cocktail you need to try is…a Negroni!
With its rich red color, bold flavor, and bracing alcohol content, the negroni is a statement drink that you’ll want to sit and savor.
This 3 ingredient cocktail gets its jewel-like color from Campari, an Italian bitter that used to owe its color to crushed insects. Luckily they’ve found less icky dyes to achieve the same results!
Campari manages to taste bitter, fruity, and spicy all at once and is infused with herbs and fruits.
Originally designed as a pre-dinner aperitif, Count Negroni of Florence, Italy ordered an Americano (Campari, sweet vermouth, and soda) but he wanted it with a bit more kick. Gin was added and voila! The Negroni was born!
How To Make A Negroni
Ingredients:
- 1 oz gin
- 1 oz Campari
- 1 oz sweet or semi-sweet vermouth
- Garnish: Orange peel
Directions:
- In a cocktail mixing glass, combine gin, sweet vermouth, and Campari.
- Add ice to the mixing glass and stir for 30 seconds.
- Add ice to a lowball glass and strain the drink into the glass.
- Squeeze the orange peel into the drink to release the oils. Swipe the peel around the edge of the glass and then drop it in and serve.

The next gin cocktail you need to try is… The Perfect Gin Martini!
Few drinks make a statement like a classic gin martini.
Bond liked his shaken (gasp!) not stirred, and you can get a martini with olives, lemon peel, or even a tiny onion if it floats your boat.
But there are few drinks better than a classic dry martini. Crisp, cool, searing and spirit-forward, the martini is steeped in tradition and can be dressed up or dressed down like any classic staple.
Believed to have been invented at the Knickerbocker Hotel by Martini di Arma di Taggia for America’s first billionaire, John C. Rockefeller.
From there, the mighty martini swept through Wall Street and Madison Avenue and became the executive’s choice for lunch, with the “three-Martini lunch” becoming the Mad Men norm.
How To Make A Classic Dry Martini
Ingredients:
- 3 oz gin
- ½ oz dry white vermouth
- Garnish: one olive, lemon peel, or small white onion, to preference
Directions:
- In a mixing glass, combine gin and vermouth and stir with ice for 30 seconds. (Bond can have his shake, we'll keep it classic.)
- Strain into a chilled cocktail or martini glass.
- Use a paring knife to peel a 1" strip of lemon peel. Squeeze it into the drink to release the oils, then swipe the lemon around the rim of the glass before tossing it in.
*To make it the Rockefeller way, use London Dry Gin, dry vermouth, bitters, lemon peel, and one olive.
