You're a Technician!
Technicians are the doers – they love their work and appreciate craftsmanship. They love getting the job done properly, to the best of their ability.
Technicians dislike the unknown because it is a distraction from getting the job done. For you, the easiest parts of running a business are doing the work, work techniques or work processes, such as:
tinkering and understanding how things work,
knowing how to do something well,
learning about the science, theory or tools behind your work
getting the process or method right
creating efficiencies in the job,
delivering a quality product,
doing a good job,
working the hours required to finish or get it right,
creating an appealing work space.
As a doer, you love doing the actual work and doing a really good job of it.
On the flip-side, the more strongly technical you are, the more likely you will have challenges around the vision, ideas, structures, plans, systems, or anything that requires creative thinking, the bigger picture ‘why’, or organising.
It's much easier for you to just do the work to the best of your ability. All of the ideas and structures can be done by someone else – you want them to be turned into tangible work tasks that can actually get results.
You may tend to be more visual (reading) and/or kinaesthetic (learn by doing), because you like to understand how things work. You probably prefer clear instructions with pictures or videos that explain how things work, rather than detailed spreadsheets, plans or flow charts of ideas.
I invite you to reflect on how closely aligned you are with the traits listed above. This gives you clues as to where you might need help in your business.
And I strongly recommend you get that support, because the creative and structural parts of a business, like strategic plans, talking to people, finding clients, financial spreadsheets and operational plans are essential for business building and growth.
Note that you may not align strongly with all the traits listed.
You may be a blend of Technician/Manager, or Technician/Entrepreneur. Rarely do we find someone equally competent in all three.
The aim of this quiz is to help you recognise your natural strengths so you can make the most of them, and get help with the rest instead of trying to make yourself do what doesn't come naturally.
