What Time Is Happy Hour? (No or Few Signs of Burnout)
Good news! You are not on a path to burning out. Phew! You have a few signs of stress, but overall you are handling life's craziness well and have a handle on stress management. (You could teach all of us a thing or two...) Burnout is only one of the may ways that stress can manifest in our body, so keep your eyes open for how you process stress.
The textbook definition of burnout is a state of emotional, physical, and mental exhaustion that is caused by excessive and prolonged stress – typically in a workplace setting. It occurs when you feel:
Overwhelmed
Emotionally drained
Unable to meet constant demands
People who are genuinely burned out often describe:
Extreme exhaustion and depletion of energy
A cynical and irritable attitude toward work
Feelings of helplessness, an inability to do and focus on work, and low morale
Inability to make decisions – simple or complicated
My definition of burnout is similar to the textbook definition, but I add in continued feelings of fear, related to work or not completing work. As well as, feeling trapped in your job.
Be sure to maintain a plan to prevent burnout by taking some time off from your job, have dessert, and tell a funny joke. Don't ya know laughter is the best medicine? What to do next:
