You Could Use Some Guidance
Congrats on completing the filmmaker readiness quiz! According to your results, you might need to do a bit of research before heading out to the set...You might have a promising idea and all the passion to back it up, but without some basic film producer know-how, your path to success might be riddled with roadblocks. But, no worries, I'm here to help!“TO BE A FILMMAKER, YOU HAVE TO LEAD. YOU HAVE TO BE PSYCHOTIC IN YOUR DESIRE TO DO SOMETHING. PEOPLE ALWAYS LIKE THE EASY ROUTE. YOU HAVE TO PUSH VERY HARD TO GET SOMETHING UNUSUAL, SOMETHING DIFFERENT.”- Danny BoyleThree easy tips to make your film a smash hit success...1. A good script is keyThe cliche says that you can make bad film from a good script, but you cannot make a good film from a bad script. Script development is the one part of filmmaking which isn't costly. So make sure your script is good. On the other hand, there are those who spend years and years perfecting their scripts, proud of how long it has taken them. That is going to the opposite extreme. Make sure your script is good, and then make a film. (Or write another script if you're a writer.)2. Get to work networkingThis tip is an oldie but a goodie... Success isn’t about what you do as much as who you know. When you invest time not only in meeting filmmakers, but also going above and beyond to help them, you’re building a support system. It's difficult to describe how extremely relationship-based the film industry actually is. To do well as a filmmaker, you will need to build a community and learn how to pitch yourself and your projects.3. Refine your brandFilmmakers tend not to think of themselves as a brand (and they definitely don't think of their films as products.) But....All filmmakers and film producers are entrepreneurs at heart. So learn how to think like an entrepreneur and figure out your brand. First, make sure your film aligns with your message. On top of that, use consistent messaging across all social media platforms and show that you know your ideal audience like the back of your hand! This will insure that you are always making films with an eye to who your audience really is."Who’s the producer behind all these filmmaking tips?" I’m glad you asked...Hey there 👋 I’m Joanne Butcher, founder and CEO of Filmmaker Success. Well, I’ve been there, too. After making several short films and running a film school and an independent cinema, I created a Statewide Film Competition to make a Feature film. It was a great way for producers to learn how to better market themselves and their projects.BUT it turned out there were a whole lot of unexpected roadblocks.Even though the producers had everything they needed to be successful, still most of those films did not get made! Eventually I learned that filmmakers needed more support, especially when it comes to raising the money they need to make their films. Not sure where to begin?
