The Grass is Greenest Where you Water it.
Ok you may be thinking, "I'm happy enough in my job, maybe this is as good as it gets." ...but finding yourself envious of Dietitians on other career paths and wondering what if...You've worked WAY to hard to get where you are today to not absolutely LOVE your career. It's amazing what happens to a dietitian when they find their ideal career path in nutrition and dietetics. The difference in the way they show up in and outside of work is truly staggering. How do you figure out your ideal dietetics career path? Read on...If exploring how to be happier in your dietetics career feels like an endless sea of options and self-doubt, you’re not alone, my friend. Investing in your career satisfaction is not something we often talk about in our field. You might be worrying…… What if I spend time trying to find the "right" path but end up with nothing?… What if I start to pivot to a new career path and regret it?… Or that you're already exhausted by your current situation that you can't imagine spending more time or energy exploring options (Hey, I've been there too).On top of that, you’ve got a list of ideas a mile long, hundreds of conflicting opinions, all sorts of alarming employment statistics (did you know on average 75% of positions are filled via networking relationships?), and no one who can tell exactly HOW to move forward in your career. But luckily there are steps you can take to make it a whole lot easier. The first being...1. Put yourself in the center of your careerTake a step back and remind yourself of what's important to YOU in your career. Often when things seem even a little "off" in your career, there's a reason if you look for it. Spend 10-15 minutes doing a brain dump on your ideal career. That's right, grab a sheet of paper or open a document and get going. Brainstorm ideas in the following three categories: Your Head (experience, knowledge, interests), Your Heart (passion, values, life goals) and Your Needs (compensation, work environment, work culture/style).Now that you've done this, let's think about your current role & career path...2. Get clear on what you've got. Do a quick audit of your current circumstances. What do you enjoy about your current role and what doesn't align with you? As you think through these things, write them down. Get them out of your head. Make sure you refer back to that brain dump list. How does your current job align with your ideal work environment, work culture, specific roles & responsibilities, measures of success, management, opportunity for growth, compensation, mentorship etc. As you're doing this, make note of anything that you have the ability to change or advocate for change in your current role. That'll come in handy next as you formulate a plan :) 3. Keep an open mind & explore your optionsNow take a step back to evaluate your current job prospects. Specifically look for job opportunities or pivots that fill in the gaps you just identified in your current position. Remember every single job is going to include some kind of sacrifice. What you're doing here is exploring if there are other opportunities or paths for you that minimize your sacrifices. If you like what you do but do not like your workplace culture, look for a similar position in another organization with better community culture. If you are frustrated in your role because it's too far away from where you want to live, well, then look at opportunities closer to home. Get the picture? Make sure you're staying grounded in what's realistically possible on your unique timeframe (and financial needs) and focusing on fixing those major pain points. At this point you get to compare your options! Which feels easier or more achievable to you, trying to advocate for change in your current role or pursuing a new position or career pivot?Want support while you work through that process and then take steps to adjust your career to maximize your success and satisfaction?Attend one of our Free Masterclasses!"Who’s this Dietitian giving me all these career tips?"
