As parents, it is crucial to understand that this is how they learn and how to work within their learning style. Remember, every child is unique and has a unique blend of learning styles. Children who are auditory learners understand the World around them by understanding and remembering things they heard. Auditory learning store information by the way it sounds and have an easier time understanding spoken instructions than written ones. Simply reading in their minds through a textbook will generally be ineffective for them... they need to hear it! Rather than looking or taking a more hands-on approach, they may have to talk out information to make sense of it. Keep this in mind! Textbooks on their own will be less effective for your child unless some auditory component accompanies them, so look for a curriculum that has that in it. Preferably one in which they can listen to the lesson beforehand. How to spot an Auditory Learner...Keeping it going is my jam!! When bored, they are likely to speak, hum, or sing to themselves. Thanks for breaking the ice! Don't get me wrong, just because your Auditory learner appears to be easily distracted as they sing and hum to themselves, more than likely, they are listening. Support your Auditory Learner by...Removing distractions--Auditory learners tend to be stimulated by what they hear. A quiet place for your homeschooler to learn and work is a must. Bring the audio in--try reading out loud, listen to an audio lesson, or have your child read out loud in their quiet place. Remember, we want the lesson to stick; let them hear it!By providing them with flashcards and encouraging them to read their class materials out loud, listen to audiobooks or videos for assignments, and record themselves to playback and listen. On top of that, try teaching them how to turn their lessons into easily memorizable songs and stories. How to identify a Reading/Writing Learner...Learning styles refer to how learners prefer to have information presented to them. Reading and writing learners understand things better once they've written them down, seen a diagram or graph, listed items, taken notes, preferred closed captions while watching tv, go for a hardcover book over an audiobook, and so on. Basically...Reading and writing learners-- is a type of learning during which people prefer to read and write to learn more effectively. These learners are read and write learners and usually understand best by reading and writing down the information. Their dominant learning process consists of a combination between reading and writing, such as reading to understand and note-taking to learn. You can support your Reading/Writing learner by...Understanding that your homeschooler relies on reading to understand and learn. Reading/writing learners have difficulty grasping the information presented via lectures or pictures. They feel comfortable with the written word. Reading/Writing learners will typically go for textbooks, articles, pamphlets, and other reference materials such as dictionaries and encyclopedias. How Kinesthetic Learners Learn....Kinesthetic children are tactile learners. They learn by touching and doing. You understand and remember things through physical movement. Your "hands-on" homeschooler prefers to touch, move, build, hold, play, squish, dissect, draw and explore their lesson in a hands-on way. Let's get physical!Getting physical allows your homeschooler to comprehend what is being taught. Keep in mind that the difficulty of a traditional setting (i.e., textbooks) will be challenging for your child. A typical classroom setting lesson doesn't really make sense unless they see, hear it, and get physical in some way that brings it all together in their mind. Don't worry! There are plenty of homeschool resources to help you get creative with your at-home lesson plans. You can support your kinesthetic learner byBeing active and taking frequent breaks, creating fun homeschooling informative games, incorporating sensory toys/seats, encouraging physical activity, allowing for the disassembling and reassembling of an item, and much more. Remember, kinesthetic homeschoolers often speak with their hands and gestures and may have difficulty sitting still.
