Your Style is... Supporting
Your supporting leadership style means you're all about collaboration. By working together, you know your team can accomplish big, bright things. You don't have to be the star of the show to shine...On top of that, you give your employees space to make important decisions. This makes them feel valuable to your business. And if someone performs highly, you're keen to reward their efforts with more freedom and responsibility. You trust your employees to get the job done, which lets you take a step back from your desk and relax once in awhile – but rest assured, you've earned it!"If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader." – John Quincy Adams3 Quick Tips for Transforming Your Work Environment1) Provide Tools for SuccessPeople can only be truly effective when they are motivated and engaged, and they have support for success. So what can you do?The first and most obvious thing is to ensure people have the right tools, equipment and resources to do their jobs. When people are working hard, they also want to know that they are working as effectively as possible. Paying overtime for a job that should have taken half the time with the right equipment is not efficient. Help clear the blockers. When people have great ideas and they are bumping up against blockers – people, the culture, resourcing, a big part you can play is in helping them navigate the blocks. Help them with negotiating, refining ideas, writing business cases, and getting their ideas heard. Don’t let your motivated stars give up because they were simply not able to do a good job.2) Reward Hard WorkThis tip should almost go without saying. Your team is going to work harder and more efficiently with an incentive system in place – if you can’t afford bonuses, recognition will do the trick. Take a couple of minutes out of your staff meeting to address their accomplishments. You could also try letting them leave work early or come in late. This will show everyone in your office that their hard work doesn’t go unnoticed or unappreciated.3)Talk About CareersPeople are generally more motivated and engaged when they feel they have a future with your organisation, and some sort of career development opportunities. Now in some organisations this isn’t always going to be easy. But there are a number of things you can do.Have regular “where do you see yourself going” conversations. Provide development and think outside the box – courses, on the job, shadowing, stretch assignments, projects etc. Help people to think laterally – career paths these days are not going to be straight upward. People often move sideways (and even down) for a good opportunity. Before We Go Any Further – Let Me Introduce MyselfHi there, I’m Ros Cardinal, founder and Managing Director of Shaping Change.
