Wowzer! It appears you’re on an amazing team! 🥳
From your perspective, your team dynamics are on point! The Psychological Safety on your team seems to be working. As you may already be familiar with...Psychological Safety is the belief that one can speak up without risk of punishment or humiliation. Organizational Behavioral scientist Amy Edmondson of Harvard first introduced the concept of psychological safety and defined it as, “a shared belief held by members of a team that the team is safe for interpersonal risk taking.” Taking a risk around your team members may sound simple. But is it really that simple to do? And furthermore, as a leader, why should you care or support it? You absolutely have to care, and here’s why. Teams with greater psychological safety:• perform better• have greater innovation• communicate more effectively• learn quicker • are more engaged with each other• are more productiveUltimately, what this means for you is, a decrease in time, talent and money walking out your door.Yes! Your team appears to be doing quite well. Congratulations! However, what you’ve just shared is only one perspective... YOURS. Aren’t you curious if the rest of your team feels the same way as you do? Rather than assume, it’s better to be certain that everyone is on the same page so there aren’t any hidden perceptions.Creating psychological safety involves the entire team but is driven by leadership. In a psychologically safe environment, all team members have equal rights to express themselves, regardless of their position, rank, or job title. Psychological safety encourages employees to develop a learning culture in the workplace. Everyone is encouraged to learn and grow and see errors, problems, and constructive feedback as learning opportunities rather than setbacks. It’s about being vulnerable .It’s about being human. It’s about building trust, learning and growing, to be better together.
