You should focus on... Parts Work & Shadow Work
The Internal Family Systems Model is an integrative approach to individual psychotherapy developed by Richard C. Schwartz, and is now commonly referenced as Parts Work. Parts Work is primarily built on the word itself: Part.Parts Work acknowledges the Truth that we are comprised of many, many different parts of ourselves.And that each part has its own unique experience, world view & needs.A part is formed when there was a need or an experience of life that required a "splitting off" so to speak. Where the part split off from the wholeness of you & formed its own beliefs, fears, stories & felt experiences in order to survive in the demands of the life at that time.What the parts don't know is that they don't need to continue to be in a state of survival & protection anymore. And that when they were formed, it was needed/necessary to survive, but now it's different.You are different.Moment by moment.Day by day.Emerging as a new being, with more awareness, support & tools to support you in navigating the ebs and flows of life.Shadow Work: anything within you that is disowned or unseen.How do you know if Parts Work & Shadow Work is really what you should focus on in your journey?Let’s play “Tick the boxes!” Have you or do you…✅ You judge others easily & often (whether you're concsious of it or not)✅ You judge yourself easily & often (whether you're concsious of it or not)✅ You fear judgement.✅ You have a difficult time accepting yourself FULLY, for all of you.✅ You tend to feel avoidant or overwhelmed by big emotions & don't know what to do when emotions arise.✅ Feel at odds with yourself often.✅ Feel disconnected or numb from life often✅ Feel like sadness, anger or anxiety is going to last forever.✅ Feel consumed by thoughts.✅ Your heart feels closed off, protected, making it difficult to feel true love or connection in your heart.✅ Engage in critical self-talk✅ Minimize or downplay how you really feel✅ Tend to attract partners that mirror or are similar to mom, dad or a primary caregiver✅ Feel shame, gulit or embarassment often✅ Have a difficult time trusting life & letting people in...if you check even 3 of these boxes, then chances are you would highly benefit from Parts Work & Shadow Work with a trusted mentor, to create space for new experiences in life, beyond your previous experiences in the past. Life will take on the lens, the view, the belief of that specific part.2. There may be no concept of time, ie: if the part were to speak it would say it fears this feeling going on "forever."3. Usually the part has an agenda in what its trying to do for you-- so you might notice the motive of the part.4. If you are not lit up on life, feeling connected to the oneness of all life: you are in a part.How to remedy a part:1. Label & notice "I am in a part."2. Give this part of you the presence it needed & deserves. Like a friend, just be with it, feel it, listen to it. Take this moment as an opportunity to really "get" its world.3. Feel yourself beyond this part, notice this experience, view of reality is a part of you-- it's not ALL of you.4. Ask the part what it needs.5. Give the part what it needs, even if it doesn't make "logical" sense.6. Patience. Slow down.. there is no where to get.7. Notice how your world view or experience of life might look or feel a bit different now.8. For bigger parts, presence of another human is essential to support the part back to wholeness.9. Depending on the intensity & maturity of the part, the part may come up to be felt, witnessed & presenced many times. In working in the context of Parts Work, we also address protectors & managers that support the underlying parts.It's important to reference when a part of you is online, so that you can also reference your wholeness.That this part of you isn't the totality of who you are.And while the part's world view & lens of reality is exceptionally valid, it isn't necessarily rooted in Truth of what's happening now.The Truth About Parts Work & Shadow Work...Hey there, I’m Dr. Katelyn Means, Euphoria Extraordinaire, ie: Somatic Healing & Awakening Coach… I am likely busting a move on a dance floor nearest you.
